St Mellon’s Hotel was previously named Llwynarthen. The house was built in 1878 and was home to Sir Henry Webb, a baronet and commander of the Gloucester, Worcester and Liverpool regiments during the Great War. He also carried out duties as the member of parliament for the Forest of Dean, and later as the member of parliament for Cardiff East.
In its distinguished history, the hotel became the home of a Junior Lord of the Treasury, then was converted into a First World War military hospital. It was then transformed into the swish Blue Horizon Club in the 1920’s, a base for anti-aircraft guns during World War II, before finally becoming a Hotel and Country Club in the 1950’s.
In the summer of 2014, the hotel was purchased from a chain, and became an independent, locally owned hotel. We are immensely proud of the history and heritage of the hotel. We are working exceptionally hard to create an environment which retains its charm, but fully embraces the 21st century.
The hotel is continuing to evolve, with a nod to our history. Our restaurant has been named as Henry Webb Restaurant, to pay homage to its first owner. Our inspiration is drawn from our incredible, unique and rural setting which is placed between two urban, vibrant cities. You will see our bedrooms and open areas are being individually designed to create a sense of peace, relaxation and ultimate comfort for our guests.
Each of the 10 rooms in the Manor House has its own uniqueness and is individually styled depending on the layout. Some overlook the front gardens and fountain and can accommodate a cot or fold away bed which can be booked in advance.
Room facilities include free Wi-Fi, desk, Thalgo toiletries, hairdryer, television, shower and/or bath. Check in time is 14.30 and check out time is 11.00.
The Henry Webb Restaurant and lounge has recently undergone a major refurbishment and now offers diners a choice of menus. The table d’hote is created using only the best of local fresh seasonal produce and allows the guests to choose either a one, two or three course meal. Alongside that menu our executive Chef has prepared two of his own a la carte signature dishes for each course. These menus, together with the new thirty bin wine list will give our guests plenty of choice to enjoy a memorable dining experience.
